You are a VP of engineering who just got laid off. Here is what is actually happening.

If you are a VP of engineering in a 2026 layoff, you are at the executive layer of the market — narrow, slow, and political. VP-level transitions are rarely the result of a single quarter. They tend to follow a strategy disagreement, an acquisition, or a board-level reshuffle. None of those are about your competence as an operator. What makes this layoff harder than other categories: VP searches are inherently long. There are very few roles. Most are filled by network, executive search, or board introduction — not by applying. A VP search run as a tech IC search will last twelve to eighteen months and likely not land. A VP search run through your network and a small set of recruiters can land in three to six. What is still true: the skill of running a 100-person engineering org, partnering with the CEO, and shipping the company's plan is rare. Companies that need that exact skill exist in healthcare, finance, energy, and increasingly govtech. They are not all advertising and they are not all in tech. The job is to find them, not to wait for them.

Healthcare and life sciences engineering executive roles

Health systems, large EHR vendors, and life sciences companies are hiring engineering executives to lead modernisation efforts that touch every part of their operation. The cycles are long, the comp is competitive, and the layoff cycles far rarer.

  • VP of engineering at an EHR vendor
  • Chief technology officer at a health system
  • Engineering executive at a clinical software firm
Financial services and fintech engineering executive roles

Banks, insurers, asset managers, and large fintech firms hire engineering VPs from tech to lead platform, infrastructure, and product engineering at scale. The compliance overlay is heavy but the comp ladder is competitive and the floor is more stable.

  • VP of platform engineering at a bank
  • Engineering VP at a wealth platform
  • Insurance technology executive
Energy, utilities, and industrial engineering executive roles

Utilities, grid operators, climate-tech firms, and industrial software vendors are hiring engineering executives to professionalise software orgs that have been under-managed for years. Pay has caught up to tech in many regions.

  • VP of engineering at a climate-tech firm
  • CTO at a utility software company
  • Engineering executive at an industrial-software vendor
Public sector and govtech engineering executive roles

USDS, large federal contractors, state digital teams, and govtech vendors are paying closer to market for engineering executives than they used to. The mission is real, the timelines forgiving, and the work survives any economic cycle.

  • Federal contractor engineering VP
  • State digital service CTO
  • Govtech vendor engineering executive

Questions

Common questions

Should I take a director role to get back in faster?

Rarely. Stepping back to director after a VP role is read by future recruiters as a downgrade and it is hard to reverse. The exception is a clear step up in company size, scope, or domain — for example, director at a much larger company. A lateral VP move into a non-tech industry is usually more durable than a step down at a peer company.

Should I consider an interim or fractional CTO role?

Yes, with discipline. Interim and fractional roles can sustain runway, refresh skills, and lead to full-time offers. They work best when treated as time-boxed, with the formal search continuing in parallel. The risk is using them as avoidance — a year of fractional work without movement on the formal search rarely produces a great VP outcome.

How does a VP-level search differ from a senior IC search?

Almost entirely network-driven. Most VP roles are filled through executive search, board introductions, or warm referrals. Applying through job boards is largely ineffective at this level. The work is to identify thirty to fifty target companies, find the path to each one, and engage executive search firms — not to apply broadly.

How long is a VP of engineering job search taking right now?

Six to twelve months is normal, sometimes longer. The VP layer is structurally tight, the loops are long, and the search is mostly relationship-driven. VPs who treat the search as a focused project — sixty target companies, executive search introductions, board-network outreach — usually beat that timeline. Job-board-driven VP searches almost never do.
