You are a director of engineering who just got laid off. Here is what is actually happening.

If you are an engineering director in a 2026 layoff, you are in the layer of the org chart that has been cut hardest. Companies have been collapsing director-of-engineering seats into VP roles or pushing directors back to senior EM. The seats that remain are higher-bar, broader-scope, and harder to land than they were three years ago. The market is real, narrow, and slow. What makes this layoff harder than other categories: director searches are long even in good markets. There are fewer roles, fewer companies that need them, and longer interview loops with three to five executive interviews. Right now those loops have stretched further. Six to twelve months is not uncommon for a director-level search. What is still true: companies that build complex software still need leaders who can run an engineering org of forty to a hundred people, partner with peer executives, and translate business strategy into engineering plans. That role exists. It just lives at fewer companies and the bar to enter is higher.

Healthcare and clinical software engineering leadership

Health systems, EHR vendors, and clinical software companies are hiring engineering directors from tech to lead modernisation programs at scale. The cycles are slower, the regulatory overlay heavier, and the layoff cycles far rarer.

  • Director of engineering at an EHR vendor
  • Clinical software engineering director
  • Health system engineering director
Financial services and fintech engineering leadership

Banks, insurers, and asset managers hire engineering directors from tech to lead platform, infrastructure, and product engineering orgs. The compliance overlay is heavy but the comp is competitive and the floor is more stable.

  • Trading platform engineering director
  • Core banking director of engineering
  • Insurance platform engineering director
Energy, utilities, and industrial software

Utilities, grid operators, and climate-tech firms are hiring engineering directors in volume to professionalise software organisations that have been under-managed for years. Pay has caught up to tech in many regions.

  • Energy software engineering director
  • Grid platform director of engineering
  • Industrial software engineering director
Public sector engineering leadership

Federal contractors, state digital service teams, and major govtech vendors are paying closer to market for engineering directors than they used to. The mission is real, the cycles forgiving, and the role survives any economic cycle.

  • Director of engineering at a federal contractor
  • State digital service director
  • Govtech vendor engineering director

Questions

Common questions

Should I take a senior EM role to get back in faster?

Sometimes — but only if the company is genuinely larger or the scope is larger. A senior EM role at a peer-calibre tech company is usually read by the next recruiter as a downgrade. A lateral director move into a non-tech industry is often more durable. The exception is a clear step up in domain or stability — that is worth the title sacrifice.

Are director of engineering roles still being hired in 2026?

Yes, but the market is narrow. Director hiring at growth-stage tech is slow. Director hiring in healthcare, finance, energy, and public sector is steady and pays competitively. Directors who target durable industries close searches faster than those holding out for the same kind of company they left. The interview loops are uniformly long.

Should I take an interim or fractional CTO role while I search?

It depends on your financial runway. Fractional and interim roles can be useful for keeping skills fresh and meeting people, but they rarely lead to full-time roles directly. They are best used as bridges, not strategies. If you take one, set a clear time limit and continue the formal search alongside it.

How long is a director of engineering job search taking right now?

Six to twelve months is normal. The director layer is structurally tight and the interview loops are long. Directors who target two or three industries deliberately, write their résumé in concrete organisational outcomes (org built, programs shipped, attrition reduced), and run focused outreach to thirty to fifty companies beat the timeline.
